Can AVANT Steam Reforming Catalysts Revolutionize Industrial Hydrogen Production?

Jan. 27, 2024

The extensive and diverse applications of hydrogen across various industries underscore its pivotal role in modern industrial processes. Sectors such as petrochemicals, fine chemicals, metallurgy, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, food, electricity, and atomic energy all heavily rely on hydrogen.

Although methods for hydrogen production were known before World War II, its widespread industrial applications came later. Electrolysis of water for hydrogen production has a history spanning over 200 years. In 1915, natural gas steam reforming achieved success in the laboratory, with industrialization following in 1928 by the Standard Oil Company in the United States. Germany's development of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in 1933 utilized coal to produce oil. Post-World War II, methods like natural gas steam reforming and crude oil or naphtha steam reforming took precedence over coal hydrogenation.

The 1950s saw the development of light oil steam reforming by the British company ICI, reaching industrialization in 1959. In the 1980s, the accessibility and cost-effectiveness of methanol and liquid ammonia led to the emergence of technologies such as methanol decomposition and ammonia decomposition for hydrogen production.

Furthermore, new technologies like solar, bioenergy, nuclear energy-based hydrogen production, and hydrogen production from hydrogen sulfide are still in the research and development stages. Various hydrogen-rich gases from refineries undergo purification and separation into hydrogen gas using methods like Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation.

Presently, large-scale industrial hydrogen production predominantly relies on hydrocarbon steam reforming and coal gasification. Hydrocarbon steam reforming is considered the optimal process route for refineries, utilizing raw materials such as natural gas, various refinery gases, naphtha, and liquefied petroleum gas.

As we conclude this exploration into hydrogen production, it is crucial to emphasize the role of advanced catalysts in propelling the field forward. AVANT Steam Reforming Catalysts stand out as significant contributors, representing a notable advancement in hydrogen production technologies. These catalysts leverage advanced formulations and catalytic processes, ensuring efficient and sustainable conversion of hydrocarbons into hydrogen through steam reforming.
