Synthetic ammonia (synthetic ammonia) refers to ammonia directly synthesized from nitrogen and hydrogen with the presence of ammonia synthesis catalysts in the presence of high temperature and high 

pressure . Except for a small amount of by-product recovered from coke oven gas, most of ammonia in the world is synthetic ammonia. The main feedstocks for the production of synthetic ammonia are natural gas, naphtha, heavy oil and coal (or coke).

The upstream participants in the synthetic ammonia industry are mainly feedstock suppliers. According to the principle of synthetic ammonia production, Chinese synthetic ammonia feedstocks are mainly divided into three types: coal, natural gas and coke oven gas.Among the feedstocks for Chinese synthetic ammonia capacity, coal accounts for about 76.7%, natural gas accounts for about 20.8%, coke oven gas accounts for 2.1%, and other sources account for about 0.5%. Among coal feedstocks, anthracite accounts for about 47.4%, and non-anthracite (bituminous coal, lignite) accounts for about 29.3%.

By the end of 2022, the capacity of Chinese synthetic ammonia will total 63.2 million tons per year. Chinese synthetic ammonia is mainly used in agriculture. From the perspective of downstream demand, urea accounts for 61%, other fertilizers account for 19%, and the chemical industry accounts for 20%. Among them, the regions with the largest consumption of synthetic ammonia in China are mainly East China, Central South, Southwest and North China and other regions.
